James Schroeder is registered as a member of the Washington State Bar and is also registered to practise before the USPTO. He undertook coursework at Mansfield College, Oxford University, United Kingdom, before receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1990 and his Juris Doctorate from Willamette University, College of Law, Salem, in 1996. His legal coursework included studies in 1995 at the East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai.

Since 1998, he has worked both in industry and the private sector, and the technologies included not only the biotech field but also semiconductor patent prosecution for Advanced Micro Devices as well as bioinformatics, software, data networking, multimedia and consumer electronics patents for Silicon Valley clients.

2006 – 2007

  • Patent due diligence review on behalf of a Bellevue, WA, invention company.

2001 – 2006

  • Attorney in the Seattle office of LaRiviere, Grubman & Payne, a patent law firm, responsible for patent prosecution, enforcement and licensing, managing the entire patent docket of the firm and prosecuted United States and international counterparts of patent applications.

  • Intellectual property enforcement responsibilities at LaRiviere, Grubman & Payne including litigation of licenses and patent rights. Obtained a landmark multi-million dollar jury verdict for Plaintiff on remand of Phillips v. AWH Corporation, and successfully represented Plaintiff in Gordano v. HostPro for breach of software license.

1998 – 2001

  • Member of the technology licensing team at CNF Inc. (a Fortune 500 global logistics company) in Portland, Oregon, reporting to the CIO. Implemented uniform global technology licensing agreements and standardized IT service agreements.

  • Drafted and negotiated software licensing agreements, web hosting agreements, joint development agreements and outsourcing agreements.

1998

  • Drafted patent infringement claim charts at Farkas and Manelli LLP, Washington DC, for use in patent litigation over cable modem technology
